Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won a bronze medal at the IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket, Thailand on Tuesday.
Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam (born 27 January 1999) is an Indian . She won gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and silver at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. She also won gold in clean and jerk at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships. She won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a total lift of 202 kg. She also broke Games record and national record in clean and jerk by lifting 116 kg

Champion in 55kg deadlifting
Competing in the non-Olympic women’s 55kg category, Bindyarani Devi recorded a total lift of 196kg (83kg snatch + 113kg clean and jerk) to finish third in the standings.
The effort was short of her silver medal-winning effort of 203kg at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s Kang Hyon Gyong won the gold medal in Phuket with a lift of 234kg (103kg snatch + 131kg clean and jerk). Romania’s Mihaela Cambei won the silver with a personal best of 201kg (91kg + 110kg).
The 25-year-old Bindyarani began the evening with a failed attempt in 83kg snatch but succeeded on her second attempt. Her next attempt to lift 86kg fell short.
In the clean and jerk, the Indian weightlifter recorded 110kg and 113kg in her first two attempts. However, Bindyarani’s final clean and jerk attempt of 119kg proved to be unsuccessful.
As a result, Bindyarani Devi also won a silver in the clean and jerk category. At the IWF World Cup, World Championships and continental championships, medals are awarded in each for the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lifts.
Bindyarani Devi is in 29th place in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for the women’s 59kg. The top 10 ranked eligible lifters in the OQR for each weight category obtain a quota for Paris 2024.
On Monday, Mirabai Chanu competed in the women’s 49kg and finished 12th in Phuket. Currently ranked second overall, she is almost certain to secure a quota for India at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Bindyarani Devi and Mirabai Chanu were the only two Indians competing at the IWF World Cup 2024, which concludes on April 11.
The Indian could manage three legal lifts in her six attempts here and her total was a whopping 38kg less than that of North Korea’s Kang Hyon Gyong, who won the gold medal for her effort of 234kg (103kg+131kg).
Romania’s Cambei Mihaela-Valentina, who has qualified for the Paris Olympics in Mirabai Chanu’s 49kg weight class, took home the silver with a personal best effort of 201kg (91kg+110kg).
